As designed music is at the core a subject of experience and as such we tie personal experiences and memories to different tunes but even as we do so, we find ourselves less inclined to discover new music simply because we stick more to what we want to remember. Especially, when you are in your mid-thirties or your late twenties and everything is coming down on you from work to bills like rent and school fees and obviously the fact that time is moving and perhaps you don't quite feel yourself moving. I admit when you are just fresh out of highschool perhaps all you think about these days is being the first to comment on Bensoul's new release or all you think about is how you will be first to shareNyashinki's live stream. In rare cases, we find ourselves in search of new music because over and over weeks after weeks you have exhausted your playlist on repeat morning after morning, traffic jam to the next and so forth. We sometimes feel the need to discover new music when we listen to our friend's playlist and discover oh crap am so behind. In rare cases, we find ourselves in search of new music only because there is nothing else left to do. For instance, like in this epic stay safe to stay home idleness that leaves us empty and seeking more only that now you are limited to working from home and discovering new content.
As rhythm ties our memories to the experiences of our lives we often find ourselves more excited about the throwbacks that made our lives simpler during our teenage and youth seasons as opposed to getting a new playlist when you are struggling with divorce, or child custody battles and stuff.
It is without a doubt that sounds toy with patterns in our brains creating maps that new sounds can map to and perhaps that why when you hear a new sound that hasn't already been mapped into our brains we deem the sound to be bad. Therefore, the brain literally makes sounds we are familiar with more pleasurable. Ever wondered why you often don't like a song the first time but after listening to the song for a while you begin to like the song? It makes sense that we find comfort in songs from a familiar genre because they keep us calm and give us the comfort we seek especially during this period of forced staycation. I guess it is what it is nobody like the uncertainty of newness. As such we find ourselves searching and listening to old songs and songs or genres we are familiar with.
Nevertheless, as music remains to hold our experiences and memories (both good and bad), it also actively shapes our culture and as we seat and wait out the virus we must endeavor to reach out to the depths for the world will never stop spinning. This day will one day be a memory and what will intensify the experience you have today is the new music you discover even if it Is just from the artist above you. Therefore, since we will remember these pandemic days as we do the love and the friendship we lost or even just our campus days- let us dig in to find and explore new music beyond the familiar.
